Ha! I definitely have an opinion on what families should and shouldn't wear to a photo session. I usually won't say a word though, unless I'm asked. :-)
Here are my suggestions. If you choose to follow them great, if you go your own way, no worries. They are your photos! I just want you to be happy with them.
1. Stay Away From White
This is especially true if you are planning an outdoor photo session. Solid white tends to get blown out very easily with my style of photography. I like to have high contrast-bold images and that sometimes makes the white stand out even more.
2. Stay Away from Black
Though I really feel like white is the only color I really would NOT pick. Black is the second color that is hard. Details can get lost in clothing when it comes to black. But this is definitely a better choice over white.
3. DO Choose BRIGHT/FUN colors!
I LOVE LOVE LOVE when families pick fun color combinations or patterns that make them stand out from their backgrounds. Here a few examples of my favorite color choices over the years:
Below: Have males wear a different color than females as one option.
Below: Mom and Dad can wear a different color from the kids to stand out more/less.
Photo below: A great use of white and black! If you're set on those colors.
4. DO Coordinate, but DON'T Be TOO Matchy Matchy
I also think it is more visually interesting if you choose one or two colors as a theme and have everyone wear something that goes with the theme. Again, it is more exciting visually to coordinate than if everyone is dressed in white shirts and jeans or all in the same shirt color and khaki pants. Again, see the images just above this for good examples of families who did a great job coordinating without being matchy matchy.
5. Don't be afraid to run your outfit options by me
If you're not quite sure what to wear. Don't be afraid to email me a photo or ask me about what you're thinking. I'd be happy to give you my opinion.
Overall, just be COMFORTABLE with what you have on. I want everyone to show off their normal personalities in the photos. I try to make the sessions as relaxed as possible. So just make sure you're happy with how you look and everything will be great!
